Exam Days Just Ahead

Semester exams will begin on Tuesday, January 9, and go through January 12. One exam will be given on the first day, with regular school hours that day. The following three days, January 10, 11, and 12, there will be two exams each day and there will be a two-hour early dismissal each day.

FBLA Explores Careers

Twelve business students and two FBLA advisers attended the annual Business Career Day at Lynchburg College on November 17, 2000. Following registration, opening session, and keynote speaker, participants attended three program sessions, were taken on a campus tour, and enjoyed the Lynchburg College Thanksgiving Dinner.

Plans are underway for Christmas giving, a nursing home visit, and Longwood Region competitive events in February.

Bee Humane

Brookville’s newest club is a service organization dedicated to helping animals. As an auxiliary of the Humane Society of Campbell County, Bee Humane is taking an active role in helping animals find the people of their dreams during adoption fairs at PetSmart. Volunteers also visit the animal shelter weekly, socializing the animals and assisting the shelter employees.

Officers for the year are Elisa Fort and Melanie Larson, co-presidents; Dana Woody, vice-president; Krista Engel, secretary; and Diane Stanton, treasurer.

We have been collecting pet food and other pet-care items to use at the holiday season for shelter animals. We are also planning to share our food collection with the pets of some of the elderly folks in Campbell County.

Sponsors for the club are Ms. Jennifer Wilson, Mrs. Leslie Staley, and Mrs. Barbe Shackelford.

Winning ACE Team

The ACE team completed a successful season by winning contests with Amherst and Rustburg under direction of Mrs. Diane Cornelison and Mr. Thrasher. The ACE team competed four times. The varsity members were Chris Wilson, Megan Olsen, Scott Tucker and David Avery. JV members were Elisa Fort, Melanie Larson, Andrew Pyun, Josh Gilliland, Daniel Martin, Tim Abbott, Josh Canada, Matt Farley, John Hawkins, Jon Lyons, Tyler Lovelace, Doug O’Reagan, and Joey Logan.

Benefit Dance A Huge Success

The leadership class was pleased with the turnout at the winter Sadie Hawkins dance they sponsored on Saturday, December 9. Over $1300 was raised to help the family of Matt Striet with expenses related to Matt’s recent hospitalization.

If you would like to donate to the fund, checks should be written to Sun Trust Fund, and may be dropped off at Brookville High School.

Thanks to all who helped with the dance!

Winter Weather Bulletin

With the bad weather season upon us, it isn’t too early to begin making alternate plans for those days the school system is forced to delay opening, dismiss early, or close for the day. Although it may be inconvenient and a burden for working parents, the school system’s decisions will help ensure the safety and welfare of the 8,400 Campbell County students.

The county encompasses roughly 511 square miles, with weather conditions differing significantly from one locale to another. Roads may appear to be fine in your area, but may be hazardous in other parts of the county. Decisions to alter the normal hours of school operation are made only after consultation with the National Weather Service, Virginia State Police, Department of Transportation, area police and sheriff’s departments, and road conditions spotters throughout the county.

Once the decision has been made, the four local television stations and sixteen area radio stations are notified of the school system’s status, and are asked to broadcast the information. You are encouraged to listen to these stations for further updates because of changing weather conditions. A delayed opening of one hour could quite likely become a two-hour delay or even a closing.

During the day the weather is continually monitored. If it becomes necessary to close early, the same media will be notified for immediate broadcast. We try to give parents a two-hour notice of early closing whenever possible. On any day when the forecast is for wintry weather, parents are asked to monitor radio and television stations to keep abreast of possible early dismissals. You are also asked to avoid calling the school for closing information, as it ties up their telephone lines.

With the help of local media and your patience and understanding, we plan a smooth transition through the upcoming season.

Transportation Information

The Campbell County Schools Transportation Department, in conjunction with radio station WKDE FM 105.5 will bring you up to date information regarding school buses running late in the county.

In addition, WKDE will provide an afternoon update for any buses running late on the way home from school. This information will broadcast live at 4:05 p.m.
