Designing Students

Brookville technology students showed their stuff at the 2001 Technology Fair on Friday, May 11, 2001 at Central Virginia Community College. Eleven area high schools participated in this event. As a segment of the instructional program for students enrolled in the Technology Education Drafting program at Brookville High School, students are required to design and construct various types of architectural and engineering models of design problems. Every student is required to develop a portfolio of the work they have produced in the course of the current year. This body of work is then entered in the competition at the Fair with the area high schools.

The BHS "Team Math Problem Solving" students placed first, earning $25.00. Cathy Herman, Chris Steuck, Todd Koren, and Vinh Pham contrtibuted to this effort. In the "Junk Buggy Construction/Race, Team BHS also placed first, and earned another $25.00 prize. Jeff Porter, Jeff Wilson, Ryan Wojdyla, and AJ Ebersold constructed a junk buggy from parts gleaned from the Campbell County landfill, put it together on the site of the race, then were able to ride it for two laps around the track. BHS also received first place in "School Participation," earning the most overall points in competition. They were presented with a $250.00 prize.

Other students who also placed with their designs included the following: Portfolio Competition, Technical Drafting , Daniel Beck , 2nd Place; Henry Wodke IV, 3rd Place . Engineering Drafting , David Bailey , 1st Place; Jason Chalfant , 3rd Place; Tyler King , Honorable Mention. Architectural Drafting , Jeff Wilson, 1st Place; Todd Koren , Honorable Mention. Track Renovation Update

Thanks to a lot of hard work by our Athletic Boosters Club and our track committee and thanks to the generosity of the Brookville community, we have reached our goal of $130,000.00 to renovate and "rubberize" our track. This project has been on the drawing board for many years and we are finally ready to break ground on this exciting new project. The new track will serve our track teams, Phys-Ed classes, Tomahawk Elementary, Brookville Middle, and the entire Brookville-Timberlake area. We would like to thank all those who worked so hard on the fundraising effort and those who donated to this cause.

Latin Year-In-Review

What has been happening in the Latin Department this year? Although you have not heard from the Latin students in the newsletter this year, the students have had a very busy year as usual.

The kick-off "get-acquainted" meeting of the Latin Club in September was a trip to the Fort Hill Bowling Center for bowling followed by pizza (of course!).

During September and October, Latin students generously donated needed supplies to the World Help Organization to be distributed to children in hospitals and orphanages in third world countries.

November 19th and 20th found students in Richmond for the annual Virginia Junior Classical League Convention. This event gives students the opportunity to compete with other students throughout the state in academic contests relating to Latin and the history and culture of the Romans. In addition, the students compete in numerous arts and crafts contests which must have a classical theme. Again this year, the students returned with numerous awards.

The top winner was Kailen Verilla who placed 5th in Sweepstakes for entering and placing in numerous contests. Keely Scott received a 1st in Modern Myth, John Hawkins was awarded a 2nd in Latin Oratory while Matt walker earned a 3rd place in Storytelling.

Among the top ten academic winners in the state were: Amy Dalton, 9th, Latin literature; Matt Farley, 9th, Latin literature; John Hawkins, 6th, geography, Katie Howard, 10th , pentathlon; Jessica Kan, 4th, history and 9th, vocabulary; Megan McLaughlin, 7th, vocabulary and 10th geography; Candace Motz, 10th, mythology; Brad Nichols, 5th, history; Jai Rogers, 5th, Latin literature; Kailen Verilla, 10th, mythology, 9th, derivatives and 1st, geography.

We were fortunate to have some wonderful parents willing to give up their weekend to enable more students to attend.

Snow changed the plans for the Christmas caroling (Christmas carols in Latin!) which was to take place at a local nursing home and then in the neighborhood, followed by a meal prepared by Fazoli’s. However, students had already spread the joy of the season by sponsoring a four-year-old from the History Club angel tree. Because of the very kind generosity of the Latin students, a wonderful Christmas was provided for this little girl.

February found the students engaged in their annual Valentine’s Day Flower sale. Students bought long-stem carnations to be delivered to their friends, teachers, and those "special ones" at the beginning of first period. Profit from this activity helped to pay for the Latin Banquet in March.

The Latin Banquet was held March 24, 2001 in the BHS cafeteria which had been transformed by the talents of the students into Day and Night. The presiding deities were Aurora goddess of the dawn ( Cassie Mabery) and Nyx, goddess of night, (Alison Bowyer). The banquet gives the students an opportunity to step back into history as students, dressed as Romans, enjoy an evening of feasting and entertainment. The first-year students and those upperclassmen joining for the first time serve their "masters"–second-years patricians (wealthy class of citizens) and gods and goddesses (Latin III-V). Students provided the entertainment and a host of wonderful parents helped in the kitchen. A dance followed with Mr. Ed Anderson of "Makin’ Tracs" as DJ.

A number of Latin students took the National Latin Exam in March and 34 students won awards from Brookville Middle and High Schools. Latin I (BMS) winners were as follows: gold medal, Laura Helferstay; silver medal, Courtney Wood and Nicole Lawson; magna cum laude, Emily Franklin, Philip Layman, and Thomas Miller; cum laude, Matt Starr, Matt Smith, Becky Mix, Brian Paljug, Zane Cowins, Thomas Ripley, Steve Sims, and Lindsay Bomar.

High school winners were: Latin I, magna cum laude, Craig Kompelien, Jenny Lindstrom, Allison Scoles, Jessica Kan, and Shelley Jewell; cum laude, Matthew Fickle. Latin II, silver medal, Melissa Aghamkar, John Hawkins, and Rob Puckette; magna cum laude, Whitney Conroy; cum laude, Keely Scott and Katie Hammer. Latin III, magna cum laude, Kelly Stone; cum laude, Sarah Wright. Latin IV, magna cum laude, Scott Tucker and Kailen Verilla; cum laude, Elisa Fort, Jennifer Logan, Andrew Vicks, and Ben Glass.

In April, the fifth year Latin students traveled to RMWC for the performance of the Greek play by Euripides, Iphigeneia at Aulis. Students watched the play in the outdoor theater on the campus, adding to the overall experience.

In May, the Latin students joined the French and Spanish students in celebrating Foreign Language Week whose purpose is to emphasize the value of taking foreign language in today’s world. The week culminated with the annual Market Day when students of all languages set up markets similar to those in ancient Rome and modern Europe. Students had to bargain for items in the language being studied (Yes, even Latin!) and purchase them with the currency of the country being studied.

Officers for the 2001-2002 year are being selected and will be inducted at the Awards Reception, March 24, 2001. In addition, awards will be presented to convention winners and winners on the National Latin Exam. Parents are invited to this final Latin Club meeting of the year.

Two other fun events will take place before the March 24th meeting. Putt-Putt and pizza will be an event of the 16th of May and the annual club picnic is scheduled for May 23 at Peaks View Park from 3 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Prepare For Fall Sports

Any student planning to participate in a sport at BHS for the 2001-2002 school year must have a physical after May 1, 2001. Parents are encouraged to make appointments during the summer months for physicals, so students will be ready to practice when each season begins. All fall sports practices begin August 6, with the exception of golf, which begins August 1. No student will be eligible to participate in any tryout or practice without a physical. Physicals should be completed on an official VHSL form. These forms may be picked up in the main office.

Guidance News

The Guidance Department is in the process of finishing student scheduling for next year. During the week of May 28, students will receive a printout of their class selections. While this printout will not be the student’s actual schedule, it should be used to identify any discrepancies in their course selections. If the courses listed are not accurate, please call the Guidance Office, 239-2636, no later than June 15. Any changes made after June 15 will have to be approved through Mr. Whorley.
