NEWS FROM THE HIVE!
Student Attendance
|
T |
he Guidance Office has provided the following article from The Parent Institute:
“Attendance records follow your teen throughout school and life.
If your teen skips class, she may just think she’s getting herself out of a day’s work. But what she should know is that she may be getting herself out of much more – such as future opportunities she might have wanted.
Coming to school is not just about today, this grading period or even this school year. It’s an investment in your student’s future.
Here are some things to consider:
Senioritis
|
S |
enioritis is the tendency for high school seniors – feeling assured of a university slot – to lose motivation, stop showing up to class, drop courses, and generally slack off.
More and more universities and colleges are systematically revoking the admission of high school students who slack off their senior year.
Most students find out their admission status in the spring of their senior year and are asked to confirm by May 1 whether they are coming. But, acceptance to almost all schools comes with an often overlooked caveat stating that students must continue their work at an acceptable level through the remainder of their senior year.
Final transcripts are mailed to colleges from BHS’s Guidance Department before the end of June. At this time, college admission counselors review the student’s transcript to see if students have continued to maintain their academic status. If not, letters will be mailed rescinding the college’s offer of acceptance. The rescinded students usually are given the chance to perform well at a community college and be reinstated at a later date. For some students, there are extenuating circumstances and these can be explained to the admissions officer, but these are exceptions!
As counselors, we know that this can be a hard letter to receive after celebrating the admission to the college of your choice, but it is the reality of what is being done.
Please encourage your senior to continue to work up to his/her potential.
Sophomore/Junior Student Parent Night
|
T |
he Guidance Department will host a Sophomore/Junior Student Parent Night on Wednesday, November 15. The program will be at BHS and will start at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. The students will have the opportunity to pick two out of four sessions to attend during the workshop. The sessions focus on what the students need to be accomplishing during high school to pursue their plans after high school. As a reward for attending, the students will receive a coupon to use for extra credit with a teacher of their choice. The session choices are:
1. Talk with and hear information from admissions counselors at 4-year colleges such as JMU and Elon.
2. Talk with and hear information from admissions counselors from CVCC.
3. Talk with and hear information from the military representatives (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines).
4. Talk with military recruiters about programs offered.
Each session will last approximately 45 minutes. The students and parents will leave with a wealth of information on where they need to focus and what they need to accomplish while here at BHS in order to pursue their goals after high school. Please give the Guidance Office a call at 239-2636 if you have any questions about this program.
SAT and ACT Information
The following tips are for students to remember the day before taking SAT or ACT tests:
· Gather up everything you’re going to need for the next morning. You don’t want to be frantically searching for your admission ticket just before you rush out the door. You’ll need the following items:
- Acceptable Photo ID
- Your SAT/ACT admission ticket
- Two sharpened #2 pencils
- A calculator with fresh batteries
· Write down the directions to the test center and how long it will take you to get there.
· Be well rested and ready to go. Get a good night’s sleep the night before the test.
· Set two alarms – one in your room and one in someone else’s room in case you hit the snooze button one time too many.
On the morning of the test:
· Eat breakfast. You’ll be at the test center for four hours and you’re likely to get hungry.
· Bring snacks. You will get a short break at the end of each hour of testing. You can eat or drink any snacks you have brought with you during these breaks. The snack will go a long way toward keeping you alert during the entire test.
· Bring acceptable Photo ID and your Admission Ticket.
· Bring two #2 pencils and a good eraser – a pencil is required for the questions and the essay. Mechanical pencils or ink pens are not allowed.
· Arrive at your test center no later than 7:45 a.m. Don’t risk getting locked out if you’re 30 seconds late.
· Give yourself plenty of time to get to the test center. Consider traffic, weather conditions, flat tires, and anything else that could slow you down.
During the test:
· Work only on the section you are supposed to be working on. You are not to go back to a section once that section has ended. You also can’t start the next section if you finish a section early.
· Do easier questions first. You earn just as many points for easy questions as for the hard ones.
· Make sure you use a #2 pencil on the answer sheet. It is very important to fill in the entire circle darkly and completely. If you change your response, erase completely as possible. It is very important that you follow these instructions for filling out your answer sheet.
· Use all of your time. Students around you may close up their test books and put their heads on their desks, but you know better. Go back to review problems you are not quite sure about the first time. Or, if you skipped any hard problems, use the time to try to work them out.
· Stay positive and focused. Keep your mind on your work, not your score.
· Try not to worry about whether you “nailed it” or “blew it.” It’ll be a long three weeks if you do. Know you did your best – and celebrate. You deserve it.
Good Luck!

News From the School Nurse
|
T |
he State of Virginia mandates screening all tenth graders and transfer students for vision, hearing, and scoliosis checks during PE classes.
Scoliosis checks were done in a private setting.
Please encourage your child to bring his/her glasses to school every day.
You will be notified if problems are detected. If you have problems or concerns, please call BHS at 239-2636 and ask for the Nurse’s office.
Chorus Concert
The Brookville High School Choral Department will be presenting their fall concert on Tuesday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lynchburg College Chapel. This will be a program of “classical” music, accompanied by organ, piano, and brass. The Concert Choir, Women’s Choral, and a new group called the Chamber Singers, will present traditional choral music by composers such as Purcell, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Copland, and Bernstein. The students have been studying the history of choral music from the Middle Ages through the early 20th century to give them a better understanding of the music they are singing. It is a very challenging program and the students have been working very hard. They would appreciate a large audience. The concert is free to the public.

After Grad Party
|
A |
ll of the After Grad committees have been busy making plans for the 2007 After Grad Party and we could use your help!
We are sending letters out to the parents of the Brookville High School students requesting your help with the party, financially or otherwise. This alcohol free, drug free night of fun for our seniors is the party they really look forward to as it is the last time they get to be with all the graduates at one function before they go off for the next phase of life.
Although there is no cut off date, if you are planning on making a financial contribution it would be a great help to us if you could send your donation in now and not wait until spring. NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL! You may mail in or drop off your donation in the green After Grad box in the Main Office. Please make checks payable to: Brookville High School PTSO. Mail them to Brookville High School, 100 Laxton Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502. Be sure to mark your check with the notation “2007 AGP.”
We thank you on behalf of the graduating seniors of the Class of 2007 for considering this request.
