Comments: i knew ben pretty well because of my sister traci ,and ever since i
can remember i was tryin to be like ben tryin to hang out with my sis, mindy,
sara , gene, and ben and all of them but i never could, so then i tried being
like ben in other ways like bein as great a baseball player as him and
trying to be as good a person as him, but then i realized that wouldn`t work
because ben was the best baseball player and still is the best baseball
player EVER and no one can ever say he wasn`t a great athlete or a great
person, almost every day i watch the senior highlight video from 1999 and just
watch how close everyone in there class was and it was incredible i wish that
everyone could be as close as they were, and i always watch the baseball and
football highlights of the tape and try to improve my game to his level
hopefully i'm suceeding, everyone misses you man, even thought The Keen Family
is in texas i`ll be comin to visit ya soon

Comments: well ben, what can i say or where do i start? whenever i needed a friend to understand me or to make everything all better, you could do it. you had a smile that was always shining and willing to help. i think some of my best memories would have to consist of fruitty pebbles, herbal essence, layin in the road, city stadium, breaks at krogers, and takin pics for a birthday gift. the times i spent with you and jeremy were some of the best ever. i will cherish the friendship we shared and hold on to the memories forever. you will always be heart. i love you ben.

Comments: Ben, sometimes I wonder what it would be like if you were still here. I remember some of the shit we used to do while we kicked back and played some nice card games and what not. You are a legacy forever at VCU, I proudly wear my hat with your number 3 on it to never let you die. You are, were, and will always be one cool mofo, and will always be missed. I hope you like reading what I wrote about you as you sit in heaven looking down on us:O) Love from us all Forever! ~wes

Comments: I didn't know Ben that well, but I will say he was a very nice person. And he must have meant a lot because he is my brothers idol. My brother would talk about Ben everyday. My brother is Alex Staton. He is a freshman. He and Ben talked all the time. Alex wants to be just like him. He is special to Alex. He will always BEE. And I'm glad, because my brother couldn't have picked a better person! Ben means a lot to everyone in Lynchburg, Va, and maybe more places. I hope to talk to Ben one day in heaven. And may God bless him. Love ya Ben always ~ ! Love, Kristen S.

Comments: Although I never met Ben, my heart goes out to those he touched. I lost both my cousins to drinking and driving and I know the pain, the anger, and sorrow that is brought on by this great loss. He touched so many lives and he will forever be remembered. You can't walk into any dorm room at VCU and NOT see his picture hanging proudly on the wall. We will remember him as he was; happy! I'm only sorry I never got the chance to meet you Ben. God Bless

Comments: I didn't know Ben at all, but his death has struck all of us in just.. a terrible but positive way. Everything happens for a reason, so I suppose you could say Bens death made us all realize that drinking and driving isn't worth it. It may be fun to go out and party and everything, but think about your life, your loved ones, and the future of everyone around you in your community. Bens death has touched us all and taught us that life is a precious thing, and shouldn't be wasted. Your life is too short to act stupid. Do what you can.. live life to its fullest and everything (safely, PLEASE!) because its too short. Ben was a wonderful athlete, and was on his way in life.. but he was in that terrible accident. My heart goes out to his family in their great loss. Rest in peace Ben. You've inspired us all to think before ruining our lives.

Comments: I believe it is a shame that, we as people so often do not stop to realize how bright a light shines until it goes out. Ben Maddox was truly a bright shining light and I think that everyone that knew Ben, in whatever capacity will find that their lives are maybe just a little bit dimmer without him. It is hard for me to bring to mind anyone else that I have encountered during my lifetime who I could honestly say was as full of life as Ben was. There is some comfort to be found in the fact that Ben probably "lived" more in his 18 years than some people will live in 75. He embraced life everyday and took the most that he could from it. You may have known him intimately or you may have just passed him on the way to class occasionally, you may have only seen him on a football or baseball field, but one thing is for sure - everyone knew Ben. He could fill you with happiness, laughter, consternation, pride or just about any emotion that you can think of - in other words - he could make you feel that you were alive. I remember a time when I went into Subway and Ben was there. He took me up to the counter where he proceeded to tell the girl there that I was his mother. Ben had lost his job there because he had a tendency to call and tell them that he couldn't come to work for whatever reason. He told her that I, as his mother, could assure her that if she would give him his job back he wouldn't do that anymore. Well, I was caught, just like a moth to a flame. I did just that. Ben was an infectious person. When you found yourself around him, you just couldn't help yourself. It was obvious that she too "knew" Ben because she just smiled. Today when I look back on it I realize that neither one of us ever told that girl that I really wasn't his mother and I'm glad. I'm proud that he let me be his mom for just a few minutes. There are always two things that I was sure of when I thought about Ben and that's that one day I would tune into a major league baseball game and he would be there and the other was that someday Ben Maddox was going to make a difference in somebody's life. Well, he's probably somewhere now playing ball on a beautiful field of dreams and I'll just bet there's a crowd gathered saying - "Wow, would you just look at that new kid"! As far as making a difference goes; he did make that difference, for everyone who's life he touched whether it was in a big way or a small one. The most wonderful tribute that we all can give to Ben is to let what happened make a difference in our lives everyday that we live. Ben - I love ya kid and I'll miss ya forever.

Comments: Well, I have already written on this page once. A friend sent me an e-mail yesterday because she cared. These two poems that she sent, I can't help but share with everyone that is having to deal with the loss of someone as great as Ben. You are all still in my thoughts and prayers. I leave you with these two poems...

REMINDERS OF YOU

Seaspray and moonmist,
night clouds and dew,
roses and raindrops,
remind me of you.

Windsigh and birdsong,
blossoms on the tree,
autumn and springtime,
remind me of thee.

Doves in the air,
turning in the blue,
summer and sunlight,
remind me of you.

All of these wonders,
that I can't help but see,
and because I love you,
they remind me of thee.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF YOU

You have left a hole in my life,
You have left this earth for me to struggle through alone,
You have left me memories and treasures unforgotten.

If only you could come back,
to comfort me with your soothing words,
to hold me in your arms.

I took you for granted while you were here,
I couldn't seem to thank you enough for what you gave me,
comeback and I won't, I won't leave you to wonder about me,
I'll keep you updated and give you a hug each day...

But, as I sit here thriving in my own sorrow, I know it's impossible,
know I'll never be with you again,
I know I'll never get to feel your warm body wrapped around me,
and I know I'll never get to see that smile on our face...

We all still miss and love you Ben!! I hope that everyone is being safe and has learned what we all should have already known, before we lost our Ben. My thoughts and prayers are still with Mr. Maddox and Ben's entire family. I feel for you guys. Gene - you know that I love you and am always here for you, you are like a second bro to me now. Ben~ you are always in our hearts and can never be forgotten.

Comments: What to say? When something like this happens to someone so close to us, we are all too much in shock to speak. We all know what messages to get from this, and please take them to heart. When I think of the times I spent with Ben, only smiles come to my face. To the Maddox and Compher families, and all others that were lucky enough to have called Ben friend, I leave this quote. " I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows they were meant for a better place does rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend." You will always be in our hearts Ben

Comments: This accident hit our entire community extremely hard! Ben Maddox, I think we all know that there is so much to be said of this student, athlete, and friend to many. Although I didn't know Ben to well, I do know that he has touched so many people's lives, including mine. The first thing I did when I found out about the accident was look at all of Ben's pictures in the yearbook. One picture hurt me to look at, a picture of Ben and Mindy at the Senior Awards Banquet last year. I think this incident hit close to home for all of us. Ben was a loss that cannot be explained, nor can he be replaced. I know from those that were close to him, as well as those who weren't this came as such a surprise. Everyone has asked the question "why," and still not received an answer. I know for a few friends of mine, this was an incredible loss. But one of my friends gave me a true insight as to who Ben really was. She was telling me about how she was just waiting for Ben to jump out of the bushes behind her at the funeral and say "I'm just kidding you guyz!!" It's so hard to come to terms with the fact that he's really gone. It was only the Friday before his passing that I saw Ben at the biggest game of our football season, BHS vs. JF. Things can be so easily taken for granted and I know I'm guilty of the crime but, I think I have truly thought twice about life and how precious it is, and how quickly things that cannot be replaced can be taken away from us! I hope everyone takes something away from this incident and I want to let Mindy know that I love her and she's in my thoughts and prayers! And to my gurl, Shawna, I love you too and, I'm here for you anytime you need me! All my love to those who need it, as well to those who don't!!!

Comments: I didn't know Ben at all. Actually he moved to Lynchburg the year before I left, so I never really met him. One thing I do know about him is that he was a class act. To play sports at BHS you have to be. the fact that he worked hard throughout high school to maintain his grades and get a scholarship to VCU is not only a testament to the type of person he is, but also the type of people his parents are. I played baseball this summer for VCU's assistant coach, Chris Finnwood, and he had nothing but great things to say about Ben both on and off the field. It's tragic that he never got a chance to fully reach his potential, but he is in a better place, and as sure as the sun rises in the east he is still playing ball. Gene, I don't know if you will read this, but if you do play hard. Be thankful for the ability God has given you and never, ever take it for granted. Ben's watching and he is enjoying every minute of it, so you do the same.

Comments: Ben, you were like a brother to me and I know that you felt the same way towards me. I'm sorry this had to happen, and I don't think anyone can give an answer why. There were so many sides to Ben that we all loved. A few of my favorite things about Ben were his personality, advice, and the way he always knew how to make you feel better. I'll miss Ben tremendously and it will take a long time for things to be similar to the way they were. I just want Ben to know that I love him so much and my mom does too. She always wanted you to know that you were like a son to her and I think deep down, you really were and knew it. You are now my guardian angel Ben and I can only pray that when it's my time to join you, you'll be there waiting for me with your mischievous smile and shining eyes. God Bless you Ben, I will never forget you and all that you meant to me! You've touched so many people and changed and saved so many live, including mine. You'll remain in my heart forever! Kristen

Comments: Why did this happen to Ben...I ask myself that everyday. I also ask God everyday why he let me live that same nite too. I was drunk that nite at the same time..because I had to take people home and when I got out of my car at a store two people had to keep me up I am told. It boggles my mind to wonder how I survived that nite and I thank god for letting me survive..since that nite I haven't gotten drunk, or driven drunk. I promise to Ben Maddox that I'll never drink again..and I know u smilin' down on us man...remember, NEVER drink and drive...no matter what the conditions. We'll miss u Ben

Comments: BEN
Ben has touched all our lives,
teaching us not to drink and drive.
The lord took him away from us,
he is riding with angels on the heaven-bound bus.
We have to realize he is in a better place.
Looking over us with a smile on his face.
I know it was unfortunate that he had to die,
But she shouldn't ask the reason why.
God has his plans for everyone,
and things will be great when he is finally done.
Its very hard to accept this now,
but we will...someday...somehow.
Staying close is what we need to do.
Just know I am here for all of you.
Ben has brought us all very close.
We need love and comforting dose after dose.
And as we grow into women and men,
We will never forget, and always love our Ben.

Comments: Ben~ Its your favorite cousin! I miss you more than I could ever express. Few people knew what you really meant to me. I hope you know that I love you so much. We had some fun times! Thanks for always coming to see me even though I know you had other stuff to do! It meant a lot to me. The baseball games were awesome and somehow every time you left I liked a different kind of music more than before! I am so sorry that I never got to see you play baseball, but I got to see you play football and you were awesome! You were an excellent athlete, great friend and perfect cousin who always seemed to have time for me. There won't be a day that goes by that I won't think of you. I love you forever. My heart goes out to Mindy's family. I am praying for you. To all of Ben's friends, he loved all of you so much and I know he is watching down on you from Heaven right now. God will help all of us work through this. Ben is in Heaven right now doing what he did best; playing baseball and being a best friend to everyone there. God had another plan and use for Ben and he's fulfilling that right now. I love you and I'll see you when I get there.

Comments: Thanks to everyone for sharing your thoughts online about Ben's accident. I feel privileged to have possibly helped some of you in some small way by helping you share your thoughts and prayers with each other. Ben's accident was a heartbreaking tragedy, and like many of you, I shed lots of tears reading these messages, even though I was mainly a fan in the stands at his baseball and football games. Ben played with all the excitement and flair you all described in his personality. I can understand why he was so well liked. I did know some of Ben's friends, since our daughter, Jennifer, was in the class of '98.

There are a lot of lessons to learn from this accident. Its just so sad that the lessons had to be learned this way. It seems every generation has to learn these lessons for themselves. Some of my friends (in the '60s) lost their lives the same way. Amazingly, I did get one negative e-mail message about all of this. But only that one message was negative. It took me by surprise to say the least. I got MANY others that thanked me for making it possible for everyone to share their grief, their happy memories, and their prayers for others. I appreciate the feedback from those of you who wrote to me. For those of you out there who did not learn anything from this, (and based on that one e-mail, there must still be some out there who have not learned, and don't understand).... the lessons which we've ALL heard before are:

Don't Drink & Drive
Seatbelts Save Lives
Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk

Whenever you drink, think about Ben. (Better yet, don't even drink).
Whenever you drive, think about Ben. (Wear your seatbelts!)

If I have offended someone with these comments, I'm sorry. But if it helps save even one life, it will be worth it.

We continue to pray for Ben's family and friends and for Mindy's family and friends. It will be a long time before things seem anything like normal again, if ever.

Comments: I wrote this for Ben. He meant a lot to me and even though we had our good times and our bad, the good will always live on. Okay here it is:

They're telling me you're gone now
But this just can't be true.
This isn't really happening
And I know it can't be you.
This is all so wrong,
I don't believe they're right.
But no, it's him they say,
And he died last night.

They tell me to be strong
But they just don't understand.
How can I be strong?
For this, I never planned.

Memories come flooding back,
They haunt me every day.
From the things we used to do,
To the things we used to say.

But things were left unspoken,
How was I to know,
I would've said I love you,
If I'd known that you would go.

They tell me you can hear me,
I pray that this is true.
I'm sorry I didn't say it before,
But know that I loved you.....

Love & prayers to the Maddox & Compher families, and everyone who has lost a great guy.

Comments: I guess I should start off by sayin' that most people probably never even knew that I knew Ben...I met him last year when I managed the football team. I remember the first day I found out who he was...Bryan said "see that guy up there, #8? - he thinks u look good" the first thing I thought was that he was so cute and looked really sweet. I got to know him through football and he came to my house a few times with some other friends. I realized he was sweet, funny, anything good you can imagine. when I'd go in Kroger he'd talk to me and my mom. he never would tell my mom what that tattoo meant, so I had to ask him at school the next day! :) But finding out what happened was a huge shock!! It happened so close to my house and I have to drive by all the memories people set out where the accident occurred. I don't think anyone will ever forget you Ben...I know I won't!!  We all love you and miss you so much! I pray for the Maddox family and the Comphers as they all struggle with this horrible incident. Good-Bye Ben!!  See you again some day! :) #8 #16 AAF

I understood why everyone liked you so much. You were the kind of guy that people could just get along with so well. That's why it's so hard to say good-bye. But we don't have to say good-bye...."Just I'll see you when I get there" This football season's for you big guy......You can't even imagine how many lives you've touched.....I guess that's all you can say about such great of a guy.....We will miss you greatly....#8 forever!

THE GAME WAS NEARLY OVER AND THEY WERE LOSING. THE SCORE WAS SIX TO EIGHT. BUT JESUS HE KEPT SMILING AS BEN WALKED TO THE PLATE. THE BASES THEY WERE LOADED, WITH TWO OUT THEY STILL HAD FAITH. WHEN THE PITCH WAS THROWN, BEN HIT THE BALL. A GRAND SLAM OVER HEAVEN'S GATE.

Comments: When somebody dies, a cloud turns into an angel, and flies up to tell God to put another flower on a pillow. A bird gives the message back to the world, and sings a silent prayer that makes the rain cry. People disappear, but they never really go away. The spirits up there put the sun to bed, wake up grass, and spin the earth in dizzy circles. Sometimes you can see them dancing in a cloud during the day-time, when they're supposed to be sleeping. They paint the rainbows and also the sunsets and make waves splash and tug at the tide. They toss shooting stars and listen to wishes. And when they sing wind- songs, they whisper to us, don't miss me too much. The view is nice and I'm doing just fine. With deepest sympathy

Comments: I hope that everyone knows that bad consequences come from bad choices.
I didn't know Ben all that well but from my sisters point of view he was a great person that didn't need to lose his life in that short amount of time he lived it. He had so much going for him that he didn't need this in his life. To one of my friend's brothers he was a role model and to others he was a terrific friend, but in either case he touched so many people's hearts that when he was taken out of this world that it broke so many people's hearts. To all the people that he was close to, for now there's a big hole inside of them that sometimes they can't explain and sometimes they can. Either way they lost a lot of themselves when this incident happened. So for now I say to Ben that we love you and will miss you always until we see you again!

Comments: Ben, I know that me and you never talked much but you and my bro played ball together and hung out together. But man you sure could play a mean game of Baseball. I never though that something like this could happen at BHS, but I guess I was wrong. This is tragic example and I hope that as you look down at heaven you will watch over your school mates. Ben I guess I can say for all of us at BHS that no matter where we go, what we do, and no matter what our screw ups are you will always be in heaven looking over us. But as we lay you to to rest, I would like to say goodbye Ben I miss you!!!

Comments: Well, Ben.. I only knew you for about 2 short months, but in those 2 months I found out how much of a happy-go-luck person you were. Always wearing a smile across your face. When I first found out of this tragedy I didn't know if I should believe it or not. I figured this was just some kind of joke that the VCU players were trying to pull on us, but when I saw the pain in the players eyes I knew they weren't playing. It hurt me so much to have to tell the others about this. I will never forget the time when Katie and you came over to my house. When you tried to jump the fence to hide and fell flat on your back. I couldn't help but laugh. The times you made everyone laugh around the table and danced in the dorm room. The times we spent in room 422 will never be forgotten. I will miss all the fun times that you, Katie, Emily and I as well as the rest spent together. We all miss you, but I know you are in a better place. I am wondering what was coming for you and Katie, but I guess I will never know. I know she misses you dearly, and so do I as well as everyone you came in contact with. I will treasure the days we spent together forever. My heart goes out to Ben's family and to all that knew him. You are forever in my thoughts and prayers. To Gene- Be strong. I know that you can be. You are in my thoughts and prayers as well. Ben, you will be greatly missed by everyone. I will see you when I come to that special place. *Maria

Comments: Well Ben- I only knew you for about two months, but it was long enough to know that you were such a fun-loving person. I will never forget that time in Katie's car when we listened to Red Hot Chili Peppers and you sung along to every word. You had such a great voice, and you always made me laugh. We all miss you, but I know that you are in a better place now. I will always wonder what would have come of you and Katie, it seemed so good so far. She misses you terribly, and so do I, along with everyone else. I was watching Drew Carey last night and I thought of you singing and dancing in the kitchen as you cooked your spaghetti- that was just two weeks ago. I hope you never forget those times in room 422, because they were so much fun. We danced and partied together, and chased each other down the hall. I will really miss all of the fun we had- me, you, Katie, and everyone else. These were the days, of my life, and your life. I will treasure them forever. I feel for everyone who knew you, because we have all lost such a wonderful friend. My heart goes out to Ben's family, his teammates, and to all who knew him. Much love- we miss you Ben.

Comments: For Ben: My Other Brother

You were always there no matter what
When sometimes I wanted to be left alone.
Now that you're gone when I need you the most
I pray to God to send you home.

Your presence was taken for granted
By those who loved you so much
Now we regret not getting our goodbye's
And kisses, hugs, "I love you" 's and such.

With so many memories of you
And all the great things you've done
Looks like you came out on top as usual
In our hearts and minds, you're still number one

I miss the nights just sitting and talking
With you and your crazy ways.
Now it seems nothing can make me smile
To help me pass these lonely days.

I wish we would have stopped you
From getting in the car that night.
We let you go so easily
Without putting up a fight.

We let you go that night
And now, sit, crying tears that smother
And all I can think about is how
I've lost my Other Brother.

You're in my heart and thoughts always and forever, I'll never forget you Ben, I love you like a Brother.

Comments: Ben, I didn't really know you all that well. I mean, we went to school together since 7th grade, but I wasn't one of those people you had private conversations with. I wish I could go back and change that. I didn't realize until you were gone how much of an impact you really had on my life. I was thinking the other day about all the memories I have of you from baseball, Creative Writing, and Physics from just the past few years. You were nice to everyone and I never understood how you could do that. It's still hard to believe that you're not going to be at the reunions and that no one will ever see you on earth again. I think everyone that graduated with us was at your funeral and everyone there cared about you. It's a shame that our first class reunion had to be such a sad event and that it had to take place so soon after graduation. I'll miss that smile, Ben. There was no one like you and there's no way you can be replaced. To the class of '99 - I love all you guys and if you ever need anything email me. Use your senior directories and call me if you need.
I love all you guys and I don't want to lose anymore of you.

Comments: Ben...What can I say except I can't believe it's real! You have meant the world to me since the day you walked into my life. I have never loved anyone the way that I loved you and you will always hold a special place in my heart--no one will ever take your place! Not a day will go by that you don't cross my mind. I will never forget that smile that Ben had that always reassured me everything was going to be okay. I would do anything to see that smile one more time, but we all know that you are in a better place that we can only dream of for now. Please watch over me as you always have--I need you now more than ever! Thank you for making me the person I am today! You were my heart and soul and always will be! Be good 'till I get there! I love you more than you know and we all miss you! My thoughts and prayers are with your family, Gene, and the Comphers! To the class of '99 we will help each other through this one day at a time--I'm here for you all! #16 will live forever in our memories--I love you!

The times we had over the summer are priceless and I'll never forget them. Every trip was so fun because I had to stay with one of the craziest guys in the world, and that was you. If you don't know, you're the reason that VCU saw me. If they weren't there to see you, then I would have never gotten seen by them. I thank you so much for that. You were one of the most competitive guys on this planet. I used to love pitching against you, even if you hit a 500 ft. bomb off of me. Ben, it seems so unreal that you are gone. Comments: I can remember last year after Thanksgiving when Ben, Derek and I all went to my house and ate every single leftover in the refrigerator, and when Ben finally got me to jump in the huge mud puddle on the back of the dugout, and the way he used to strut around the locker room having something to say about everyone and everything. Ben was one of the most intriguing people I have ever met in my life. He was good at everything he did, and he knew that. Most people just think they are good and try to back it up, which doesn't work, but Ben had the best of both worlds. Growing up with him and all my other teammates on and off the baseball diamond has been like a dream come true. No one could ask for a better group of friends. Comments: Although Ben and I were more acquaintances than friends, I know he was well loved, and an aspiring athlete. It's hard to imagine that someone of this character could be taken away so early in his prime. I can't help but think of Jeff Landrum, who was also taken from us way before his time. My thoughts go out to the Maddox family for the grief they must be experiencing right now. And to Gene, keep your head up man! This will be a hard time to overcome, but when you do, you'll know you can endure anything! And the same goes to the rest of those closest to Ben. He's still with all of you in your thoughts.

When I needed someone to say things will be okay you said it, and now I have to say it to all the people who were close to you and who you touched. I'll always remember you, you had a certain glow in your eyes that told people you really enjoyed life, and that you were always happy. I have never seen that kind of glow in anyone else and maybe I never will. My thoughts and all my prayers go out to everyone who is grieving and especially to the Maddox family and the Compher family. Comments: Saturday night a friend has died.
For what I don't know why
He went out to have fun with his friends
But never knew it would be the end
His death has brought a lot of sorrow
But with the grace of God there will be a tomorrow
He was to many to be the best
Sadly on October 20th he will be laid to rest
He was an excellent, loving guy
I know he wouldn't want everyone to cry
He lived life to the fullest
And never harmed anyone
It's sad that his life is done.
Hope you're up there chillin with God
Knowing we're down here thinking of you
You will be missed dearly by all your "crew"
Don't ever forget you will always be loved by family and friends
One day we'll all see ya at the end
Hope your soul is resting in peace
But til then my friend hopefully we'll meet again.
GOOD LUCK BEN!
WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
REST IN PEACE!!

Comments: Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of birds circling in flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.

This child has touched so many lives. No one will ever forget those dancing eyes and radiant smile. Many of us knew him through his athletic talents (which were awesome). For those of you who shared his heart and soul, he will live on in your hearts. Hold fast to your memories.

Comments: Ben, Well, what can we say? We have all lost someone who is very special to each of us in different ways. To some he was a best friend, to others a casual friend, and to even more, a great star they watched from the stands. Many of us saw you as more than one of those things. I know I cheered for you on the baseball and football fields for the last three years. I also remember that you were a great friend to many people. Whenever I saw you at the lockers, you always had something funny to say to me or a smile that could brighten anyone's day. You were a great athlete and will be truly missed. I pray for you and Mindy and the families that have been tragically touched by this accident. I also pray for Gene and the many others that are suffering right now. Well, there's not much more to say other than, we'll see you when we get there. Watch over us all until then. We'll never forget the shining star of Brookville. Love ya, Jen

Simple gestures on the field and off will always keep you a place in my heart. It is easier to try and hide the pain than face it. Comments: On October 17, 1999, around 12:30 in the morning, my friend's life was cut short. Even though I wasn't as close to him as many others, I still knew him. From what I knew of him, he had a great personality and was good at many sports including football and baseball. I first got to know him during Spring of 1999, baseball season. He had many dreams, and wanted to go to college and play baseball, and maybe even professionally, I dunno. When he came home for fall break, he made a mistake and partied a little too much with many of his friends, went riding with a girl, who had also been drinking, then there was an accident. Because of this accident, many have lost a great friend, and his family has lost a great son, cousin, grandson, nephew, etc. He had a lot going for him, and because of 1 mistake he is no longer with us. Ben Maddox will be loved and missed by everyone! "We love you and will never forget you!" Love always, Kristin

I remember how when we played ball in the younger days of Majors and Seniors, you were always a great source of humor for us all. And then this summer when I actually got to know you a little better, I began to realize that you were someone that would always be there to lend someone some laughter to brighten their day. You are missed greatly, and I know that I will see and hear from you soon. My regards go out to the Maddox family. Much love and sorrow, Brian

Comments: When I heard about Ben, I wasn't sure to believe it or not. I mean this is Ben Maddox they were talking about, someone who I have never heard of getting hurt. Ben you will never know how much I cared about you. You would talk to me about anything whether it was girls or a baseball game, whatever was on your mind you let me know. Not saying we were the best of friends, but I would still consider you my friend. I don't think you understand how much we all miss you. It's like a piece of everyone who knew you has been ripped out, and cannot be replaced. I use to think that everything happened for a reason, but now I'm not so sure. I mean what was the reason for your accident, why was it your time. It was way too early for you to go, and I think I speak for everyone when I say that. If I could go back to a couple of years ago one thing I would change about our friendship would be that I took more time out to get to know you better. You were one of the main reasons I went to creative writing. We could sit and joke about anything, you were a big part of my life, and I hope you knew that, and if you didn't, I hope you do now. I wish you could of told me the way you always kept a big smile on your face. Life wont be the same without you, and try to keep a eye on all of us from the skies above. Gene I hope you can be strong enough to pull through times like this. I have never been in a situation like yours, but I wish you the strength. I'm sure you will and if you ever need anything get in touch with me in any way you can. My # is 525-9202 and please don't hesitate to call. Love ya. Mindy I hope you are doing fine. Comments: Ben, I am at a loss for words. We have been through so much together. Through all the good times and the few bad times we had, we were always there for each other. You showed me how to live my life to the fullest. No one but you could have done that for me. We all miss you more than anything buddy.  I know we have our whole lives ahead of us, but it wont be the same without our Ben. Without you, we no longer have anyone to turn to when we need a laugh. Take it easy up there with the Big Guy. I know you are watching over us and protecting us now. Your family is in all our prayers. I love you Ben, and I miss you so much. I know I will see you again. Until that time comes, know that I still love you man.

Comments: Words can't express the pain we all feel. Nothing can be said to make up for our loss. Ben was a great guy; always fooling around and joking. He meant the world to us and still does. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers! For our group, (you know who you are) we have to stick together through this, there's no other way. BEN, you are in our thoughts and on our minds always and forever we love you and miss you with all of our hearts babe. We'll see you when we get there! Love You Always, Say

Comments: Ben was a brother to me, ever since we became friends when he came here from Texas our 7th grade year. We had some crazy times and some down times, but no matter what was happening you could look to Ben as a comic relief. I will always remember the times we had and all the stupid stuff we did, I will always love him like a brother and keep him in my heart and prayers. I love you Ben........Matt

Comments: What little time I spent around Ben was definitely humorous and filled with constant laughter. I am positive God will use this tragedy to His glory -- Our loss could mean someone else's salvation. Prayers and thoughts are with the family of Ben, Mindy and Her Family, as well as all of his friends from "The Zoo" of Hyland Heights Baptist Church (HHBC Youth Group) -- www.hhbc.net

Comments: Ben was like a son to me. Matt met him when he and his family first moved here from Texas when they were in junior high. I loved him like a son and fussed at him the same way when he needed it. We will miss him greatly.
