Brookville High School PTSO History

In the early 90's, a group of concerned parents organized the BHS Parent-Teacher-Student Organization. The intention was to offer a link between the parents and the school, and to develop programs that would benefit our students. A steering committee format was decided upon so that everyone would feel comfortable to join in the proceedings and discussions.

We chose not to be involved in any fund-raising activities and decided that the dues would be sufficient to cover costs. Volunteering was the key contribution we could make and was needed much more than any financial support we could give.

The administration really didn't think a PTSO at the high school level would work--they were skeptical, but they allowed us to try. It wasn't long before they were very happy Brookville had a PTSO!!!

Although, many people take for granted that certain school functions have "always been there," none of the following programs were at Brookville until the PTSO was formed. These programs were begun---and have continued, because of the PTSO:

The After-Graduation Party - Because Graduation night is proven to be one of the most dangerous nights for students because of drinking and driving, the PTSO wanted to provide an alternate celebration that would not involve alcohol or drugs. This All-Night Party has become a tradition at Brookville and has been a tremendous success over the years with about 75-80% of all seniors in attendance.

Senior Outlook Day - The PTSO wanted to help the Guidance Department provide a special informative day for seniors. The seniors could select several seminar sessions to attend. The topics would appeal to all seniors (whether college-bound or not). Selections have included information about fashion, health, exercise, money matters, getting along with a roommate, time
management at college, etc. A special lunch (non-school pizza!) is provided for the students and another special lunch is provided for the guest speakers from the community. This is held in May, and has been a huge success over the years.

Freshman Orientation - The PTSO wanted to provide an informal, opportunity for the incoming freshmen to hear "inside information" about Brookville from upperclassmen regarding clubs, sports, and other opportunities, and the "best food lines" in the cafeteria! It also gives the new ninth graders an opportunity to tour the school with student guides and to locate their
lockers without the rest of the school in session.

Academic Letters - The PTSO felt that students should have an opportunity to earn a Brookville school letter for academic achievement as well as through sports or band participation. The criteria for the Academic Letter was set at 3.75. (Higher than eligibility for National Honor Society!) Quite an honor! Parents of the students are invited to a breakfast where the awards are
presented.

Open House - It's hard to believe, but prior to the PTSO, parents had no opportunity to follow their student's schedule and meet the teachers! In fact, not too many parents felt comfortable coming in the school building. The PTSO gave parents an opportunity to help and to feel welcome at the school. It also helped the morale of the teachers--to know that the parents still
cared and were involved at the high school level.

What Other Contributions does the PTSO make?

Hospitality - This committee provides food for the Academic Breakfast, cookies for students during testing, National Education Week treats for the teachers, food for the teachers on conference days, Holiday treats, etc., etc. This committee has done much to boast the morale of the staff at BHS!

The Flashing Light for speed control - This project took a great deal of time and energy. It's hard to believe that we actually had to "work" to get a speed warning sign for Laxton Road, but the PTSO was finally successful in obtaining this for the safety of all who travel this busy road.

Volunteers - Through the PTSO, the school can locate volunteers to help with various functions such as photograph day, testing, mailings, etc.

Newsletter - A newsletter was developed to provide information to parents. The PTSO supplies the volunteers who help get the newsletter out and mailed.

CADRE: (Commonwealth Alliance for Drug Rehabilitation and Education). Because the PTSO sends a representative to CADRE meetings, information and financial support are available to BHS for the After-Grad. Party. CADRE pays for committee members to attend the State sponsored Workshop and also pays postage expenses for the BHS Party.

Some parents are under the impression that once their students get to the high school, it's time for them to "rest." After all, we've done the elementary school PTA, we'd done the middle school PTO. Our kids don't need us or even want us at the high school. Right? - WRONG!!!!!

Things run pretty smoothly in the lower grades, it's the high school years when parents really need to be involved and be aware of what is going on. The PTSO provides that link for you. Without the PTSO, many, if not all of the above mentioned programs would probably disappear--the school just does not have the staff to provide all these special programs for our students. Imagine losing the favorite of the students--the After-Grad Party!!!  Imagine losing any of them. Please don't take them for granted. They are here only because of the PTSO.
