College Representative Visits to BHS Be sure to sign up in the Guidance Office to hear the presentation and meet the representative at least 2 days prior to their visit. Make the meeting more meaningful by exploring the colleges website prior to the visit and coming to the meeting with prepared questions. Nov. 19th CVCC / Lynchburg, VA Scholarships If you have access to a computer, log on to: www.fastweb.com, www.meritaid.com, www.fafsa.ed.gov, and www.finaid.org for scholarship and financial aid information. Info. & Applications for the following scholarships are available in the Guidance Office: SAE Engineering Scholarships Deadline: Completed applications must be postmarked by Dec. 1, 2008. Eligibility: Must be a high school senior, intend to earn a degree in engineering or related science (math, chemistry, physics, biology, technologies, computer science), and meet minimum requirements with regard to GPA, SAT I and/or ACT scores as outlined by each individual scholarship. Prizes: These scholarships range in value from $1000 to full-tuition. AXA Achievement Scholarships Deadline: Completed applications must be postmarked by Dec. 15, 2008. Eligibility: Must be U.S. Citizen, high school senior who plans to enroll full-time at a 2 or 4 year college in the U.S., demonstrate ambitious & motivation as evidenced by achievement in school, community or work activities. Prizes: 52 students will be selected to receive $10,000 scholarships. Ten of those 52 students will be named national AXA Achievers and receive and additional $15,000 each for a total of $25,000. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Young Entrepreneur Scholarship Award Deadline: Completed applications must be postmarked by December 15, 2008. Eligibility: Must be a high school senior who has demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative through examples such as: starting your own business; participation in organizations such as the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Future Farmers of America (FFA), DECA, and/or Junior Achievement. Examples of your own business can include things such as someone who baby-sits, mows lawns, walks dogs, tutors, etc. An officially established business IS NOT a requirement. Prizes: $1,000 Scholarship. Four NFIB National Young Entrepreneur Awards for $5000 will also be issued as well as one $10,000 NFIB Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. THE $1000 IS A SCHOLARSHIP THAT IS GUARANTEED TO AT LEAST 1 BHS SENIOR. Better Business Bureau Student of Integrity Scholarship Deadline: Completed applications must be postmarked by January 5, 2009. Eligibility: Must be a local high school senior continuing your education after high school at a 2-year, 4-year or technical/trade college. Prizes: Five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship Deadline: Completed applications must be received by January 9, 2009. Eligibility: Must be a high school senior who is a U.S. Citizen. Prizes: Two first-place awards of $60,000, Two second-place awards of $40,000, Two third-place awards of $20,000, Two fourth-place awards of $16,000, Two fifth-place awards of $12,000, Four sixth-place awards of $10,000, Four seventh-place awards of $8000 and 482 runner-up awards of $4,000 will be awarded. John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest Deadline: Completed applications must be postmarked by January 10, 2009. Eligibility: Must be a high school student who is a U.S. Citizen Prizes: The winner receives $5000, a hardcover copy of Profiles of Courage by John F. Kennedy and is invited to attend the Profile in Courage Award ceremony to accept his/her award. The ceremony is hosted by Caroline Kennedy and Senator Edward Kennedy and held in May at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston . A second place winner receives $1000 and up to five finalists receive $500. Gates Millennium Scholars Program Deadline: Completed applications must be postmarked by January 12, 2009. Eligibility: Students are eligible to be considered for a Gates Millennium Scholarship if they: are African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American, are a citizen/legal permanent resident or national of the U.S., have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher, plan on attending a U.S. college or university as a full-time freshman in the fall, and have demonstrated leadership through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities. Prizes: 1000 scholarships are awarded each year and they cover cost of attendance at the college of your choice. National Multiple Sclerosis Society Scholarship Program Deadline: Completed applications must be postmarked by January 15, 2009. Eligibility: Must be a high school senior who has MS OR has a parent with MS and will be attending a 2-year, 4-year, technical/trade college. Prizes: The awards each year will depend on funding but last year, 422 scholarships were awarded for a total of $868,250. The minimum scholarship award is $1000 with a maximum award of $3000, although a limited numbers of awards may exceed this amount. |
