10/23/99 The inspired and determined Brookville Bees lit up the scoreboard early and often, racing to 28 first quarter points en route to a 55-14 thrashing of Staunton River Friday night at Stinger Stadium. The victory followed a tough and emotional seven-point overtime loss
to Jefferson Forest last week and the death of graduated teammate Ben Maddox
last Sunday.
Dejon Kennedy rushed for three first half touchdowns as Brookville built a 48-0 lead by halftime. Kennedy was a spectator the second half and concluded his night with 126 yards on only eight carries. The Bee's offensive line controlled the game from the outset opening wide holes for the backs and protecting the Brookville quarterbacks, allowing them to toss two scoring strikes in the first 12 minutes. "No one has attacked us like Brookville did tonight," said Bob Gray, the Staunton River coach. "We got killed. They beat us in all phases of the game. They came ready to play and we got beat by a better football team. They whipped us." The Bees swarmed on to the field quickly scoring on their first possession.
Kennedy shot through the right side of the line from 23 yards out for his
first score and Chris Cumberland kick's started the onslaught 7-0.
Staunton River fumbled their next possession and the Bees were again in good field position at the Golden Eagle 40 yard line. On the Bee's second play, Kennedy busted a counter play for a 32-yard TD jaunt. For the PAT, Brookville set up for the kick, but Nixon took the hold and tossed a pass to Burch for the two-point conversion making it 21-0. Nixon then took a break from signal-calling handing over the reins to Braxton. Braxton threw three consecutive passes, finally connecting with Levar Anthony on an acrobatic one-handed grab at the back of the end zone for a 30-yard score. Cumberland's kick ended the first quarter explosion 28-0. It was more of the Bees potent attack in the second stanza. Starting at their own nine after a Staunton River punt, Brookville went on a six play drive that took only 1:56 with Steven Kee being the workhorse during the series. Kee had four carries for 50 yards and set up his one-yard touchdown run after a 30-yard gallop. The kick was good and the Bees opened up a 35-0 lead. Kennedy scored his hat trick with 3:21 to go in the second on a 34-yard run up the middle and Anthony concluded the first half scoring with a 65-yard punt return making it 48-0 at the break. "Staunton River is a good team and I don't think that we saw that tonight," said Johnson. "With our early scoring, we really took them out of their gameplan. I hoped we would not have a 'tooth and nail' contest tonight. I'm glad of the way our kids performed." Staunton River did salvage the evening and avoid the shutout by scoring
twice in the third quarter. Joe Coley scored on a one-yard run after Jermaine
Moyer had gained 49 yards on two carries. Moyer, the area's leading rusher,
was held in check most of the evening but still managed 109 yards on 26
carries.
Brookville has two games remaining against Seminole District foes. The Bees travel to Rustburg next Friday and then entertain Amherst at home to close out the regular season. Staunton River wraps up the '99 campaign at home against Jefferson Forest next week. |
