William Edward Wright

William Edward Wright, 87, of Lynchburg, died Monday, January 27, 2003,
at Lynchburg Health & Rehabilitation.
He was born at Massie’s Mill, VA, April 13, 1915, the son of the late
William Clarence Wright and Lula Sprouse Wright.
He was retired from the Campbell County School
System where he served on the staff of Brookville High School as Assistant
Principal and teacher for 34 years. He began his career in the
field of education as a teacher of science in Warren County High School,
Front Royal, VA, in 1941. His career as a teacher was interrupted by
services in the Armed Services in World War II. He served in the Air Force
for two years and one year in the Infantry as a member of the 186th
Infantry of the 41st Division. While in the Infantry he served overseas in
the Philippine Islands and Japan as a Staff Sergeant. He was a member of
the American Legion Post 16, a life member of the P.T.A., Phi Delta Kappa
Educational Fraternity, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He graduated from
Lynchburg College in 1941 with an A.B. Degree. He received his M.Ed.
Degree from the University of Virginia in 1950. He was an active member of
Jonesboro Baptist Church in Roseland where he had assisted with the music
for over 60 years. Most recently he served as organist for the Men’s Choir
and as Assistant Secretary of the Sunday School.
He is survived by a sister, Marion W. Bragg of Piney River; two nephews,
Lewis Bragg and Billy Bragg, three nieces: Sue Wright, Ann Coleman, and
Jean Ballard, three great nephews, Justin, Aaron and Blake Ballard; and
one great niece, Mari Ballard. He was preceded in death by a brother,
Homer K. Wright.
A funeral service was conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2003,
at Jonesboro Baptist Church with the Reverend John Gordon and Dr. Jerry
Falwell officiating.
