News from the Hive!

Newsletter Changes
In an effort to save money, we will be making changes in the way we distribute our newsletter. In the past, we have mailed a newsletter to each parent using our bulk mail permit. Beginning with the second six-weeks, we will post our newsletter on the BHS website (www.bhsbees.com) and we will mail the newsletter only to those parents who request it. If you desire to have a newsletter mailed to you, please contact our main office secretary, Pam Stinnett, to make the request. You may call Ms. Stinnett at 239-2636 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., or you may leave a message on her voice mail. If you choose to view the newsletter on the website, you can expect to see it approximately one week after report cards are issued.

New Voice Mail Option
We recently installed a voice mail feature on our phone system. Several staff members including administrators, guidance counselors, school nurse, bookkeeper, and the School Resource Officer will have voice mailboxes for your convenience. During regular school business hours, an attendant will still answer the phone but now callers will have the option of leaving a message on voice mail if the person is not available. Also, if you call at night, an auto-attendant will answer and give you the option of leaving a message on voice mail. We hope that this new feature will allow us to serve you more efficiently.

Family Life Curriculum
Throughout the school year, students in Health (grade 9 and 10) will cover sensitive areas of the Family Life Curriculum. If you would like to preview the curriculum, it will be available in the main office and you can call for an appointment. If, after previewing the curriculum you decide that you do not want your child to participate in these classes, you can request to opt them out using the county OPT OUT form available at the school. You must repeat this process each year that you want to opt them out.

Library News
Students and parents are reminded to sign up for library cards at the Campbell County Public Library. The Timbrook Branch is located at 9201 Timberlake Road and parents must accompany students under 18 years to sign for a library card. The assigned library card number will allow access to periodical indexes provided through the Library of Virginia. These indexes provide invaluable information for research projects and can be accessed from home or anywhere. The public library and the library at BHS will gladly offer instruction in the use of this service.

History Department
For students in eleventh grade US/VA History, The American Nation is now available on CD-ROM and for students in eleventh grade Honors US/VA History, The Americans is now available on CD-ROM for any student who wants to be issued a copy in addition to the regular textbook. Please keep in mind, however, that a $59.99 fee will be charged if the CD-ROM is lost or damaged.

Special Education Department
In the past, Interim Progress Reports and IEP Goal Sheets have been mailed home. Beginning with the 2003-2004 school year, these documents will be sent home to the parent by the student. The school calendar and the newsletter will list the six week report cards periods so that parents are informed of when to expect information from the school.

Interims will be distributed at the mid-point of each six weeks for those students who have this procedure as part of their IEP. All students will receive updated IEP Goal Sheets at the end of each six weeks at the same time that report cards are issued. Report cards will continue to be distributed through the Guidance Department.

Students who have special education services provided on a monitor basis receive indirect services. These services may include, but are not limited to: Interim Progress Reports, conferences with teachers, updating IEP goal sheets and brief meetings with the student. The type of service most appropriate is decided at the IEP meeting. Students needing additional support should contact one of the Special Education teachers.

Please discuss these new procedures which apply to your student to ensure that you receive all school documents. If you do not receive any item, please notify the Special Education Department and another copy will be provided for you to pick up from the office.
If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact the Special Education Department. We strive to have communication between home and school be an ongoing part of the student’s services.

Band Boosters
The Brookville Band Boosters are so very proud of the Marching Band members and want to congratulate them on a job well done. They have brought back several trophies to add to the BHS collection and have put together a very entertaining show for half time at the football games.

We will be selling fruit beginning October 27. Please see any band member or booster member to order fruit or look for the order form on www.bhsbees.com. And last, but not least, please visit the Brookville Band Boosters Christmas Giftwrap Center at River Ridge Mall beginning November 28.

Thank you for supporting the Brookville Marching Band!

After Grad Committee
Although we plan on holding several fund raisers, the success of the After Grad party relies heavily on the generosity of area businesses. Historically, most businesses wait until a couple of months prior to the party before sending in their donations and there is a lot of stress involved in waiting to see how much will be donated. If you would like to make a donation to the After Grad party, please make your check payable to Brookville High School PTSO, 100 Laxton Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502. Be sure to mark your check with the notation “2004 AGP”.

SCRIP is also a great way for you to contribute to After Grad and it is painless. You can contact Trish Conroy. You can also contact Maureen Hammer to purchase SCRIP.

We are also selling stadium blankets as a fund raiser. These wonderful stadium blankets are maroon and white with the Brookville Bee mascot on them. They are heavier than a throw and are a made of a knit material. You can see a picture of the blanket on the Brookville website www.bhsbees.com. Click on clubs and organizations, then Class of 2004 After Grad, then AGP fund raisers - stadium blankets. You can contact Sherry Salefor more information.

The first parents’ meeting for the 2004 BHS After Grad party was held on October 6, 2003. If you missed this meeting, please contact any one of the Steering Committee members listed below to sign up for a committee.

ACE Team
The school year has begun once again, bringing with it the sounds of buzzing and answers to trivia questions. The ACE team is already hard at work preparing for its first competition to take place on October 22 at Heritage High School. Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, members meet in Mrs. Cornelison’s room for an hour of practice.

Members include a mix of students from every class. This year’s captain is Heather Rolfes. Co-captains are Craig Kompelien and Tim Light. The secretary is Sharon Olsen.

Athletic Boosters
The Brookville High School Athletic Boosters Club has been very busy with the opening of the 2003/2004 school year. The Boosters helped with the replacement of the backstop fencing and gates on the girls’ softball field. Check out the new score table that will be utilized by seven indoor teams during the winter season.

Helpers are still needed for concession and souvenir sales during the winter months. Any persons interested in helping Karen Stalter should contact her.

Don’t forget!! Many new items are available for purchase at the “BEE Barn” and indoor concession. We now have travel coffee mugs, new Brookville logo sweatpants and hooded sweatshirts in stock.

BHS Choral Groups
The Brookville High School Choral Department is in preparation for a combined concert with Fort Hill United Methodist Church Sanctuary Choir that is in keeping with the season of Thanksgiving. The concert will be presented on Sunday, November 16 at 4:00 p.m. at Fort Hill United Methodist Church, which will be accompanied by organ, piano, and a brass quartet. This is a free concert, and friends and family of the choral students are strongly encouraged to attend. A reception will be offered by the church following the concert.
